De Roma Wednesday 11th of December
Wed December 11
Singer, composer, dancer, actress, musician: there’s no discipline in which Fatoumata Diawara doesn’t excel. But anyone lucky enough to have attended her previous concerts at De Roma knows: with a group of top international musicians behind her and an enthusiastic, sold-out audience in front of her, her unrivalled talent as an entertainer comes into its own.
Like her great role model Oumou Sangaré, Fatouamate Diaware sings in the wassoulou tradition of her native Mali. Musically, she reconciles her West African roots and desert blues traditions with the contemporary influences of Afrobeats, pop, jazz, electronica and hip-hop. As a songwriter, she tells a personal story and conveys a universal message, her rich music accompanied by carefully chosen words.
Since her acclaimed debut album Fatou in 2011, Fatoumata has traveled the world, conquering hearts with her infectious rhythms and unique voice. Her successors Fenfo (2018) and London KO (2023) continue in this vein, confirming her status as the figurehead of a new generation of African artists. For recordings, she has already collaborated with some resounding names: Will Calhoun (Dakan), Damon Albarn (Sorry), Yemi Aladé, Roberto Fonseca, Toumani Diabaté, Disclosure (Douha), Yael Naim and Bassekou Kouyaté.

Fatoumata Diawara presents her musical project Maliba in Dijon and Paris
A leading ambassador of the African continent, singer Fatoumata Diawara presents a unique concert rooted in her album Maliba, released in 2022. This performance brings to life a vibrant musical fresco dedicated to her homeland, Mali.
(Ostinato Orchestra – Musical direction by Jean Deroyer)
Malian diva Fatoumata Diawara and her musicians offer an exceptional concert at the Opéra de Dijon, combining the talent of the Dijon Bourgogne Orchestra with the sounds of the yakandi, a traditional rhythm from the Mandingue region.
Accompanied by her musicians and the Dijon Bourgogne Orchestra, Fatoumata Diawara will mainly perform pieces from her album Maliba. As an international ambassador of Malian culture, Fatoumata Diawara uses her music to advocate for cultural dialogue and peace, as well as for the recognition of Africa’s cultural contribution to the world, particularly through the preservation of the Timbuktu manuscripts, threatened by the jihadist insurgency. Maliba embodies all of this: a testimony through which the singer highlights the rich traditions of West Africa, and a tribute to the culture and struggles of an entire people.

Diawara dances on stage with her radiant face and smile
Meanwhile, Malian actress and singer Fatoumata Diawara took to the main stage. I’m a big fan of her music and performances, and have had the opportunity to see her in concert on several occasions. The charismatic Diawara has a tragic story to tell, and has been living in France for some time now after having to leave her native country to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and singer, which is unthinkable in Mali. But she remains true to her origins, integrating typical Malian music, song and dance into her songs. They navigate between pop and traditional folk, and between melancholy and exciting dance material. Always with Diawara as the beaming centerpiece, dressed in beautiful, colorful gowns and dresses. The huge screen displays beautiful images, mixed with futuristic animations. Diawara dances on stage with his radiant face and smile, and for a moment in the soft sand in front of the stage in the sun, we imagine ourselves in Mali under the African sun.

New videoclip SOMAW feat. Angie Stone now available on Youtube
SOMAW is a sincere and powerful declaration of love to the family, an essential anchor point for the two artists accustomed to long international tours. Despite the ease and immediacy of exchanges, the distance too often remains painful, and reunions are a real source of renewal.
Being far away from your home and your extended family is not easy for anyone to cope with. The distance, the longing can make you sad and family is where it all starts. Despite the fame and the constant touring, travelling around the world, family remains the centre of gravity which keeps you grounded and energised. In this day and age getting news, pictures and messages from home is almost instantaneous and the ove is real, but distance is still a hurdle.
So, how are you, my people?

Fatoumata Diawara Talks India Return
Speaking from her home in France, Malian artist Fatoumata Diawara has a red and black scarf and stole combination worn around her, matching her hair. If you’ve seen photos of the star singer-composer and guitarist all the way from her 2011 breakout album Fatou to her 2023 album London Ko, you know that Diawara is always vibrant, in song, in person and clearly, in style as well.
Speaking to Rolling Stone India ahead of her appearance in India, the artist says Indians, like Africans, have “no fear of colors.” She adds with a smile, “In Europe, people discuss a lot about colors. They are quite shy with the colors, but in India everything is colorful and I love that. I feel connected very fast.” Of course, there’s also the food (“I don’t have a problem to eat there and that’s amazing,” she adds) and spirituality, but it’s not the first time you’d hear that from any artist visiting India. The 80 Best Albums of 2023
With London Ko, only her third studio album proper, she merges her African blues-indebted with a surprising amount of Western collaborators, ranging from soul legend Angie Stone to Gorillaz/Blur mastermind Damon Albarn, who co-produces half of the songs here. Yet even with a decked-out VIP room, the brilliance of London Ko lies with its songs, ranging from piano-driven laments of lost family on “Somaw” to her emotive collaboration with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus on “Sete”. London Ko may very well be Diawara’s most colorful record to date (check that wild dance collaboration with -M- on “Massa Den”), but it never once feels concessionary or overly commercial. Far Out: The 50 best albums of 2023
“For me, London Ko means opening your mind,” explains Malian musician Fatoumata Diawara, whose fourth studio album is one of the year’s most electrifying and joyous releases. London Ko is a celebration of identity and community, with Diawara bringing in collaborators from across the world, such as the British songwriter Damon Albarn of Gorillaz and Blur fame, Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca and Ghanaian rapper Manifest. As “the first female solo electric guitar player in Mali,” as she told Guitar World, Diawara demonstrates her incredible skills on London Ko, particularly within the track ‘Yada’. She encourages listeners to dance from the very first song, ‘Nsera’, featuring Albarn, who co-produced the record with Diawara.
Elsewhere, Diawara proves that she isn’t just an incredibly skilled singer and musician – she also lays down some poignant lyrics, exploring themes such as family, feminism and cultural identity. The singer doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, such as FGM on ‘Sete’, which is accompanied by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, elevating the track to even more emotive heights. Diawara also chooses to sing in various languages on London Ko, including English, French, and Bambara – a conscious decision to celebrate the different facets of her identity that make her whole.

Object of Sound – Fatoumata Diawara
In Mali, where Fatoumata Diawara was raised, it is common for women to sing, but much rarer for women to play an instrument. As a result, Fatoumata—who is one of the first, if not the first woman guitarist in all of Mali—has developed a self-taught, intuitive guitar playing style that is entirely her own. “This way of playing, it’s me,” says Fatoumata. “It represents my fight as a musician, as an African, and as a lady on stage.” In this episode of Object of Sound, Fatoumata talks to Hanif about how she discovered her calling as a musician, and the exciting ways that she is fusing the traditional music of her homeland with Western influences on her third studio album, out next year. Hanif closes the episode with a selection of blues and folk music from Mali. For the playlist of songs curated for this episode, head over to radio.sonos.com.

WOMAD 2022
The first night’s headliner was Fatoumata Diawara, last seen here with Lamomali, a west African group convened by French musician -M-. Between the sunny solo acoustic work of her debut and the desert blues of her recent soundtrack for Google Arts and Culture celebrating the heritage of Timbuktu, she has a weakness for relentless loud funk, and this was on display. But her set came to life with “Negue Negue”, Afrobeat with guitars like rasping wood; a run through Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman”; and an epic recreation of her breezy early calling card “Sowa” as hard rock. Carnegie Hall : Sold Out!
Fatoumata Diawara, the incendiary Malian vocalist, guitarist and songwriter, headlined a sold out bill in Zankel Hall that also featured Chimurenga Renaissance. Diawara and her five-piece band administered energy to the room as an undiluted concentrate, playing distorted, tension-ratcheting desert blues and dance music from the West African coast.
Her songs are mostly in Bambara, which she sings over tightly riveted rhythms drawn from the Wassoulou region of Mali or the highlife tradition of Ghana. She, too, insisted on the right to remain partly unknown. “Many people told me, ‘Why don’t you sing in English?’” she mused between songs. “I don’t need to sing in English to connect with you guys!” A roar rose up to agree, but the point was already proved. Fatoumata Diawara – Tiny Desk
Fatoumata Diawara is a true multi-hyphenate – an esteemed Malian singer, songwriter and actress who left her home country at 19 to pursue her artistry in France. By way of Como, Italy, she delivers a riveting performance alongside her bandmates, many of whom have toured with her since 2018. The guitarist and keyboardist here – Yacouba Kone and Arecio Smith – both contributed to her Grammy-nominated album, Fenfo. Rich, textured guitars complement her native Bambara vocals and bring a contemporary feel to her traditional Malian sound. These renditions are sonically disparate from her album versions. On “Kanou Dan Yen,” Fatoumata’s captivating and calming aura is as contagious as her electric smile. “Nterini” is a touching ode to her lover about how distance creates enormous heartache. Fatoumata ends her set on a vibrant note with “Negue Negue,” an uptempo Afrobeat jam with rambunctious rhythm and spirit. You can watch her full performance here.

It marks an international line-up that proves a tantalising prospect for many kinds of music fans.
Some of these women are also known for their campaigns against sexism. This project manifests the power of sisterhood. The message of the single is summed up in the words of Dianne Reeves: “Humanity is a blessing from the Almighty, created in all colors and ethnicities. We are all one. I sing for my sisters, I sing for my brothers.”
In the minimalist visual, which is composed of small boxes where different singers appear, they sing and dance in their own style and in different languages. The project perfectly illustrates the infinite plurality of contemporary African musical cultures.

An epic musical in Paris
Two passionate creators, Abderrahmane Sissako and Damon Albarn, are at the origin of this somewhat peculiar project: tell a story on the Thèâtre du Châtelet stage, spanning centuries and crossing borders, of a Boli, an animist fetish originating in Mali, West Africa. This musical epic transports us from Africa to Europe, from the 12thcentury to the present day, confronts without anger and with passion the tumultuous story of a meeting of two continents that ignored each other for too long. Le Vol du Boli thus depicts African history, from the Mandinka Empire and colonisation, to this date and counts with the participation of Fatoumata Diawara in the role of Queen Mother Sogolon. Show will run from October 2nd to October 18th in Paris.

Listen Now: Douha (Mali Mali)
Disclosure launched their third album ‘ENERGY’ with amazing collaborations such as Eric Thomas, and a second single ‘My High’ featuring Aminé and Northampton’s finest, slowthai.
In keeping with their international collaborators and enlisting the vocal talents of Mali’s Fatoumata Diawara for a second time (Disclosure worked with Fatoumata on their 2018, Grammy nominated single ‘Ultimatum’), the third taste of the new album is ‘Douha (Mali Mali)’ in which she sings in celebration of her birthplace and urges all Malians to be proud of their country. The brothers first teased the track during their April Boiler Room session live from isolation and fans have been asking for it ever since.
A sonic exploration of impressive proportions, ‘Douha (Mali Mali)’ transports you from the now imagined dancefloor of collective memory, over continents to distant lands to languish in ecstatic escape from the very real dire straits around us.

Fatoumata Diawara Does The Avalon Stage Proud
Beaming from ear-to-ear, Fatoumata stepped onto the scene with an air of grace about her that lifted the performance throughout. Waxing lyrical about doing away with the stereotype of Africa “as a place of war and not a place of good food and beautiful people,” the talented Diawara then unleashed the quintessentially Malian “Timbuktu Fasso,” a track that usually has a mellow demeanour to it. This version got a rock styling, however, as an epic guitar solo brought it to a climax at the end.
